In 1995, Musk embarked on his first major entrepreneurial venture, co-founding Zip2 Corporation with his brother, Kimbal. The company provided business directories and maps for newspapers online, which was a novel idea at the time. In 1999, Compaq acquired Zip2 for $341 million, making Musk’s share around $22 million.
